Russia, through the atomic energy agency Rosatom, is “committed to the creation of advanced nuclear weapons capable of maintaining a strategic balance in the world.” This was spoken by the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, quoted by the Ria Novosti news agency.

Putin’s words: Russia developing new nuclear advanced weapons

“They are briskly solving the problems of introducing innovative technologies in the fields of energy and space, nuclear medicine, ecology and modernization of the nuclear icebreaker fleet. They participate in the creation of advanced weapons capable of maintaining a strategic balance in the world,” the Kremlin chief continued.

Thus addressing Russian scientists in his message for the National Day of Nuclear Industry Workers, which has been celebrated annually in Russia since 2005.

Putin also held talks with Alexey Likhachev, director general of Rosatom. Who is convinced that the nuclear power industry’s main task is to ensure the country’s defense capability and the state’s nuclear deterrence.

In a speech to the Duma in February, Putin had explicitly asked the Defense Ministry and Rosatom to respond to any test conducted by the United States with more nuclear tests.

Nuclear energy and warfare

Synergy between scientists and the Russian military complex is supporting Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine. Over the past year Rosatom has offered its knowledge and resources to the state-owned missile and bomb system companies called upon to constantly replenish Putin’s conventional arsenal.

This is despite the fact that the atomic agency deals primarily with nuclear energy for civilian purposes. One of the reasons that has made it essentially immune to international sanctions against Russia.

Rosatom, in fact, still maintains several dozen nuclear power plants and facilities in Europe, with projects initiated around the world. And, it manages more than 30 percent of the global market for enriched uranium.

Russian scientists also took control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant near the Ukrainian city of Energodar occupied by Moscow’s army.

The plant is under observation by experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (Iaea) because of the risks posed by the presence of the military contingent manning it. Which has been accused of psychologically abusing employees who were forced to flee or be hired by Rosatom.
