The ranking of the most downloaded apps illustrates the decline of Facebook: Instagram and WhatsApp hold their own, but TikTok still dominates. The ranking aggregates installations on both operating systems iOS and Android. Therefore, it allows you to have a truly complete idea of the success of each app.

How the app market is changing
TikTok has been the most downloaded app in the world for three years, a success that currently seems unstoppable with over 670 million downloads in 2023.
Instagram holds its own, with 548 million, and maintains second position. The big surprise is Facebook, which goes from the third step of the podium to eighth place in the ranking, with only 298 million downloads, less than the video game Subway Surfers (304 million).
The Meta group consoles itself not only with Instagram’s fixed second position, but also with the growth of WhatsApp: third position, with 424 million downloads despite 2022 being a year full of controversies against this app.
Overall, Meta apps (Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook) totaled 1.27 billion downloads, almost double TikTok’s 672 million downloads.
But the alarm signal is very clear: the new generations have chosen TikTok and Facebook is clearly in decline, with Meta having to focus everything on Instagram and WhatsApp to keep younger users close to it. Will it be enough?
