Doriguzzi Energy Srl is a company specialising in biomass recovery operating in the Belluno area, the entire Triveneto region and Austria. Since Severino Doriguzzi decided to start this company in 1937, things have changed a great deal and the sector has undergone a profound evolutionary process. Whereas back then it was a job requiring considerable physical strength, a lot of time and an extremely precise technique, today the collection of wood waste, the transport of wood chips and the trade in logs, sawmill waste and firewood is carried out using very specific means and technologies capable of transforming the entire production chain into a sustainable growth opportunity for the entire sector.
“Today, Doriguzzi Energy continues to deal with this type of activity, but for the past few years we have wanted to add value to the business, focusing on biomass recovery aimed at supplying wood chip plants,” says Michele Doriguzzi, Severino’s grandson and current owner of the company. “One of the things that distinguishes us most from other operators in the market is the very high quality of the wood we use for biomass, due to the special characteristics of the forests in this area: the spruce chips we use are of excellent quality as they are almost bark-free, with a moisture content ranging from a minimum of 25% to a maximum of 35%. For several years now, we have been collaborating with various companies that are well established in the Italian and Austrian forestry context, consolidating our position on the market and our long-standing relationship with the area”.
Doriguzzi Energy can count on a respectable fleet of machines that allows it to operate in all contexts and under all conditions. “The company’s strong point,” explains the CEO, “as well as the main means of reaching the final product, is our Albach Diamant 2000 chipper, the Ferrari of the sector’s vehicles, to which we have added several vehicles transporting wood chips and general timber, such as six Walking Floor trailer trucks, two tipper trucks, three loaders, a dump truck, and a tipper tractor, which are essential for recovering biomass directly from the forest. It is true that due to the lack of personnel, which is difficult to find in our area, we have been forced to halve our fleet over the past year, but it was also an opportunity to review our priorities and put together a parterre of the latest generation of low-consumption and low-emission vehicles. On the other hand, the search for vehicles that are more advanced and in step with the ecological transition is an activity that has always characterised us, ever since my father Mario, a great innovator, developed the first fittings for transporting logs on an Austrian model and imported the first Walking Floor semi-trailers from Holland”.
Today, Doriguzzi Energy is the bridge that connects the forest to the energy production plant. Its customers include pellet factories, paper mills, power and thermal power plants, private individuals and local municipalities, such as Santo Stefano di Cadore and San Nicolò di Comelico. “The practices we put in place with a view to tracing the entire production process and making the entire supply chain sustainable have attracted the interest of many players, both public and private, and allow us to aspire to important recognitions such as the SURE-EU Sustainable Resources Verification Scheme, a certification system recognised by the European Commission and national authorities that assesses the sustainability biomass and bio-based products along the entire value chain,” says Doriguzzi. “If we talk about sustainability, we have to start from the assumption that the very nature of our activities makes them fundamental for the protection of forest areas, as they contribute significantly to the containment of fire risks and contribute to the achievement of the decarbonisation objectives of the Italian industrial system, since wood chips, our flagship product, is a very valid alternative to fossil resources and its combustion process generates low CO₂ emissions and provides, at the same time, an excellent thermal yield. Furthermore, the transformation of wood residues into a useful product reduces waste and promotes the circular economy, as biomass generates marketable product instead of waste for disposal. Also not to be underestimated is our ability to grind wood waste directly on site, reducing road travel and thereby decreasing smog pollution. In short, our activities fit in perfectly with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.
As if that were not enough, after the Vaia storm that hit the precious richness of the Val Visdende woods, Doriguzzi Energy continues to be in the front line also in the fight against the bark beetle, an insect of the beetle order, which has spread with the increase in temperatures and whose invasive action is capable of drying out trees while leaving them standing and drying up vast areas of forest. “The symbiotic relationship that we have consolidated with the territory in these seventy years of activity drives us to fight this type of calamity,” concludes the owner of Doriguzzi Energy. “We strive daily to promote a form of business that optimises resources and speeds up processes, so that these pests do not have time to spread through the woody residues left in the mountains. Our goal is to cut down diseased plants and give new life to the forest, our inexhaustible source of life”.
